Herbs for hair growth

Gotu Kola - The Arthritis Herb

According to the National Center for Health Statistics there were 45.8 million adults with diagnosed arthritis in the United States in 1993. Although the term literally means joint inflammation, arthritis really refers to a group of more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that can cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints.

The two most common forms of the disease are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, especially among older people. Sometimes it is called degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis. Osteoarthritis is a joint disease that mostly affects the cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage allows bones to glide over one another. It also absorbs energy from the shock of physical movement. In osteoarthritis, the surface layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away. This allows bones under the cartilage to rub together, causing pain, swelling, and loss of motion of the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that occurs when the bodies own immune system mistakenly attacks the synovium (cell lining inside the joint). This chronic, potentially disabling disease causes pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of function in the joints.

A Natural Remedy for Menopause- Herbs and Foods

It's dreaded by every woman beyond child-bearing years. Obviously there's no cure. Another favorite natural menopause remedy is Soy Isoflavones. This is a substance derived from soy beans and their by-products tofu and soy milk. Soy acts like a mild natural form of estrogen. It is found particularly useful by women who choose not to use prescription hormone replacement. Herbalists recommend eating soy-containing food rather than taking soy pills or capsules. Soy Isoflavones should not be used if you have a history of breast cancer.

Like Black Cohosh Root, Red Clover is a favorite herb for natural menopause remedy. Red Clover is particularly helpful for easing hot flashes. It may also lower cholesterol levels in post-menopausal women. As a mild form of estrogen, it should not be used by women who have a history or are at risk for breast cancer. Nor should it be combined with blood-thinning medications like Warfarin.

Lastly, gaining ground as natural menopause remedies are alfalfa leaves and seeds. Further research is needed on these plants, but it's been established that alfalfa has an effect on the body similar to estrogen. Those with diabetes or an autoimmune disease such as fibromyalgia or lupus should avoid using alfalfa.

Natural menopause remedies are generally safe and non-toxic if used correctly and with the precautions noted. They are available in many major supermarkets, in natural health and food stores, and of course, on-line.

Can I grow Herbs?

I have always loved gardening. Many times I have started gardens only to let them die because of lack of the right care. I have also had many indoor plants that have died and I don't know why. They were difficult plants to grow and possibly, I just didn't know how to correctly take care of them. I have come home to many shriveled and dried up plants and have wondered their mysterious deaths.

This may not be very encouraging to those who are brand new to plants but want to dive in head first. If you are interested in growing herbs, I have good news for you. Growing herbs in not hard, even I have been able to master growing herbs.

Yes, it's true. While I can't keep a patch of strawberries growing strong for an entire season, I have been able to successfully grow my own herbs. Now understand, herbs are not foolproof, but even those without even a hint of a green thumb can figure it out. Even if it takes a little trial and error, you can do it. Better yet, learn from my mistakes and you can start much better off.

I started my herb gardening with a variety of herbs. I had basil, parsley, dill, and rosemary. I had 4 little pots that I planted about a dozen seeds in each. They all sprouted quite quickly. In each pot, I had about a dozen seedlings growing quite close together. It wasn't until after a while that I realized I shouldn't have so many plants in one pot. This may have been the dismay of most of the herbs. After a couple of weeks, I thinned out each pot so that each had just one plant.

The herbs continued to grow slowly. The basil did very well, but the others seemed to stop and started to turn yellow. I watered them almost daily. Eventually, I did a little research and realized I should be adding some type of fertilizer because I hadn't put any in the soil. I started added a little bit of milk to the water every couple of weeks. The basil began to prosper, but the others didn't have a chance.

I dumped the herbs except for the basil, and started growing all basil. I realized I had been watering the plants too often, so I cut back to just a couple times a week. I continued feeding them milk every so often, and finally my herbs began to prosper.

Yes, you can grow herbs, as long as you know what you're doing. Make sure you use pots or containers that allow the water to drain out the bottom. Preferably, put a fertilizer directly in the soil when you first plant them. Make sure they get a lot of sun and never dry out. Follow the rules on the package of your seeds, be patient, and you will get the herbs you want.

Can One Overdose On Herbs Like One Can With Prescription Drugs?

A lot of people are just learning about herbs and have a lot of fear that if you tell someone about an herb they might overdose. No body wants to accidently hurt someone, but we must remember that herbs are food. So the real question is can we overdose with food and what is that in relation to a chemical overdose. Everyone should read the label on anything they put into their mouths so that they are responsible for their bodies. If we put something into our body, we are responsible for whatever action takes place.

A chemical drug overdose is extremely dangerous. There are warnings on bottles to keep them away from children and elderly people. Overdosing also includes the problem of mixing drugs, which causes serious problems. One should be sure to ask their pharmacist about the bad side affects of any drug he or she takes. The overdose of chemicals or drugs into the human body is undoubtedly dangerous and potentially fatal.

An overdose of herbs or food often causes an allergic reaction to that specific food or herb. From an herb standpoint, there are occasionally people who are allergic to a specific herb, which is why it is recommended that one starts on any herb at a very low dosage and then slowly builds up to the needed level. An overdose on herbs does not put the body into a life threatening situation. Rather, the body normalizes itself because it is simply dealing with a food.

The other situation that an overdose of herbs can cause is diarrhea, which is not a health problem unless it occurs over several days. Anyone who begins an herbal program and gets diarrhea should consult an herbalist, who will reduce the intake of those herbs that have a cleansing action on the body or colon. One can see that the overdose of an herb as compared to the overdose of chemicals is at opposite ends of the spectrum, with one being naturally cleansing and the being life threatening.

It is hoped that this knowledge motivates all of us to think of herbs as foods and not medicines. If we´re going to keep herbs out of the hands of drug companies, the fact that herbs are food must be stressed. Recent herb companies and long standing herbalists have upsettingly announced the fact that they are taking herbs to the doctors and the scientific world, taking them from the housewife who knows and uses them best.

Food or herbs can be toxic or dangerous, but not as much so as man-made chemicals. We must have the wisdom to choose foods or herbs that are not poisonous. Herbs and foods were created by nature to be safe for all people. Where as man-made chemicals are dangerous to all. One must use moderation in all things, as an overdose of herbs causes an allergic reaction that could be avoided with a little wisdom. Anyone eating any herb for the first time should begin at a low dosage and watch the bodily reaction for a couple of days. If not heavy cleansing of allergic reaction is felt, than more can be eaten.

Herbs: the Alternative Cure for Acne, Pimples, Eczema, Spots and many skin problems.

For those of us who prefer the natural, tried, tested and true to the “fast food” way of the modern life, nature has always had the answers to our needs. Since day’s undocumented, herbs have been used to treat most medical and beauty problems we may encounter, and until the end of times, this will continue to be so as long as we look after our green heritage and preserve our herbal inheritance.

Herbs can be used internally (as a drink or eaten fresh) or externally; as infusions, creams or oils. For the purpose of this article I have grouped them in their functional categories, to make using them easier. I have included simple recipes (that apply to all the herbs listed below the recipe), to help you get the job done. Good luck!

External Treatments

On the spot Treatment
A date looming and Oh No! An ugly spot! No problem, try the following:
Squeeze juice, fresh from the stem, leaf, seed, fruit or flower, directly onto the spot to kill germs, cool inflammation and improve blood circulation.
Dandelion (stems)
Nasturtium and Evening Primrose (petals)
Aloe and Bulbinella (leaf)
Garlic (clove)
Lemon (Juice)

Infusion, face splash and face steam. (As a daily cleaning treatment)
Make an “infusion” The standard recipe is: 1 teaspoon dried herbs (3 teaspoons fresh herbs) to 1 cup of boiling water, let stand for 5 minutes, strain, and let it cool. Apply to the skin with cotton wool, or as a face splash or a face steam.

Lavender and Parsley. Flowers and leaves can be used for facial steams.
Chicory – for inflammation, boils and septic areas.
Patchouli and Bergamot - powerful, antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti bacterial, regenerates skin cells

Mask, poultice or compress. (A few times a week or when the problem is really troubling)
Make a face Pac (mask) or paste (poultice) or compress (Cotton wool soaked in liquid and placed on face); the standard method is: the plant is crushed and a little water is added, leave on until dry, then wash off.

Horseradish - (paste) replace water with milk.
Stinging Nettle - (paste) eczema and acne remedy.
Comfrey and Fenugreek – (paste) use leaves.
Marigold - (paste) (flower petals) clears and softens the skin
Aloe - (paste) crush leaves (no need to add water) heals and prevents scaring.
Basil – (paste) no need to add water, draws out puss.
Camomile – (compress) reduces inflammation.
Chickweed – (poultice) relieves inflammation and brings boils to a head.
Borage – (Face Pac) made up with cooked barley and bran.

Astringent (Twice a week or before that great date, to look great.)
Use an astringent to tighten the pores, to prevent sagging and to reduce the tired look. Make an infusion, the standard quantities are; 1 cup of herbs to 1 litre boiling water, let it stand until cool. Apply to face with cotton wool.

Evening Primrose - use leaves for greasy, spotty skin, eczema and rashes.
Camomile – use petals, tones clears, purifies and softens the skin.
Horsetail – clears tones and purifies skin.
Scented Geraniums - a mild astringent to cleanse and improve circulation.

Face Cream: (Long term, twice daily treatment with cream)

Make your own face cream. The basic recipe is as follows: Use as a basis a combination of honey, lanolin, glycerine and almond oil in equal proportions. Slowly heat in a pan, when melted, add crushed herbs in the ratio 1/5 herbs to 4/5 basis and stir until the mixture is boiling. Simmer gently for 20 minutes, then strain, whisk mixture until thick and creamy and quite cold. Pour into pots and cover.

Bulbinella -soothes all skin problems.
Aloe - use the leaf sap to make a soothing and healing moisturizing cream.
Myrtle - for blemishes.
Marigold and Comfrey and Salad Burnet for dry skin
Camomile - for oily skin.


Face Oils: (Long term, twice daily treatment with oil)
(Make in the following way): Dry the herb. Add to a basic oil like Almond, Jojoba or Sweet oil (the ratio is ½ herb and ½ oil) Place in a closed jar, let it stand in a warm place (shake daily) strain after 10 days. Discard herbs, repeat process with fresh (dried) herbs until you have the strength you desire. This should be at about 4 to 5 weeks. The greater the concentration herb to oil, the more effective the mixture will become.

Marigold - (flower petals) soothes inflammation has antiseptic properties, heals and softens.
Tea Tree – is an antibacterial, soothes irritated skin. More effective if mixed with Witch Hazel.
Rose – clears tones and purifies the skin.
Evening Primrose - helps clear up spots.
Scented Geraniums - Is useful in balancing the sebum in oily and dry or inflamed skin.

INTERNAL TREATMENTS
To solve a skin problem, applying products to the face is not enough, the body has to be cleared form the inside. The benefit is to clear the blood; blood removes impurities and transports necessary nutrients to the skin. There are two different ways to do this. The first to drink an infusion (tea) the second is to include herbs freshly eaten in your diet.

Momordica Charantia or bitter melon is also known as balsam pear. It is widely cultivated in Africa, Asia and South America as a vegetable and as a diabetes treatment. Several compounds in bitter melon are confirmed as effective in treatment of diabetes. Charantin is a hypoglycaemic agent; Momordica contains a polypeptide which is confirmed by clinical trials to reduce blood sugar when injected subcutaneously.

Allium Cepa and Allium Sativum are respectively onion and garlic. Both foods are helpful in diabetic treatment plus have the added benefits of being beneficial in treating cardiovascular problems. Both substances lower blood sugar levels.

Trigonella Foenum-Graecum is also known as Fenugreek. Fenugreek contains an anti-diabetic compound via the defatted portion of the seed.

Vaccinium Myrtuillus is commonly called blueberry. A concoction of the leaves of the blueberry plant injected is only slightly less effective but less toxic than insulin. Its beneficial effects can last several weeks. The active ingredient is myrtillin, used to improve the functioning of the vascular system and effective in preventing diabetic retinopathy—an eye disorder associated with diabetes.

Studies have shown that peppermint relieves colon spasms and helps to cure ulcers and eases nervous headaches. Its main menthol, has antibacterial properties. Externally, the essential oil is used in balms and liniments to stimulate hot and cold nerve endings and increase local blood flow.

ROSEMARY (Rosmarinus officinalis)

is a stimulant of the circulatory system. It is used to treat bites and stings externally. Internally, it is used to treat migraines, bad breath, and to stimulate the sexual organs. It is also used to treat nervous disorders, upset stomachs, and is used to regulate the

menstrual cycle and ease cramps. Mixing the crushed leaves generously into meats, fish and potato salads prevents food poisoning while using it in antiseptic gargles relieves sore throat, gum problems and canker sores. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy as an inhalant and decongestant, and to enhance memory. Rosemary is also used in lotions to ease arthritis and muscle pain.

TARRAGON (Artermisia dracunculus)

is widely used as a herb in cooking. In France, it is sometimes known as "herbe au dragon", because of its ability to cure serpent bites. While tarragon stimulates the digestion, it is reputed to be a mild sedative and has been taken to aid sleep. With its mild menstruation-inducing properties, it is take if periods are delayed and its root has traditionally been applied to aching teeth.

Improving our diets and moving our bodies more will improve our cardiovascular health – this we know. We also know that herbs can help, and frequently see advertising for the latest exotic herb imported from somewhere in the world that’s going to help us. But what about those herbs and spices that we already see almost every day, that are part of many people’s diet; or that grow here in North America, perhaps right in your own garden?

Many people already cook with ginger, which is a wonderful healthy addition to the diet, but as a medicine has many benefits for increasing your cardiovascular health. It decreases cholesterol both in the blood and in the liver. [1] It improves circulation, and is a wonderful anti-inflammatory. It can even mitigate the effect of fats in the diet, including significantly reducing platelet aggregation. [2] Ginger aids digestion, improving absorption of the building blocks that your body needs for energy and repair. Aside from the usual uses in food, fresh ginger can be chopped and used to make a tasty tea.

Garlic is another useful culinary ingredient. Many people use it to help lower their cholesterol and their blood pressure, relaxing the vascular smooth muscle tissue. It also acts to promote formation of new blood vessels, is an anti-inflammatory, and an anti-oxidant. [3]

Dandelions are nothing more than a weed for many people, but as a medicine (and in the diet) it is incredibly useful. The leaves of this common herb are diuretic, extracts of which are comparable in effect to furosemide (Lasix), yet because they are so rich in potassium they don’t deplete the body the way conventional diuretics do. The roots are less diuretic than the leaves, but they are great for the liver, increasing the flow of bile, which again can benefit cholesterol levels. Dandelions are also rich sources of vitamins and minerals including beta carotene, provitamin A carotenoids, chlorophyll, vitamin C, vitamin D, a complex of B vitamins, magnesium, and zinc. [4]

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha), which can be grown in parts of North America, and some varieties even grow wild, is an incredibly useful herbal medicine. Hawthorn has significant antioxidant activity, being rich in flavonoids and in particular OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins), with the leaves and flowers being the most active. It stabilizes collagen, which may explain its ability to aid in reducing blood pressure, improving circulation, and improving heart rate. Hawthorn even reduces the accumulation of cholesterol in the liver. [5]

Green tea has been increasing in popularity for its medicinal benefits, and for good reason. It helps with cardiovascular health, preventing myocardial infarction, lowering cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, and protecting against coronary artery disease. High doses are needed, and therefore these beneficial effects require five or more cups of green tea per day. [6]

These herbs and spices are often so familiar to us that we overlook them, reaching instead for more expensive and less common imports, but they should be remembered. They have so much to offer in protecting and improving our health.

Feeling Frisky? Herbs for Fertility

Many common plants can be used to influence fertility, including red clover, partridge berry, liferoot, wild carrot, and wild yam. Some of these grow wild, others are easy to cultivate, and, with the exception of wild carrot, all are also readily available at health food stores.

For thousands of years knowledge of the herbs and wild plants that could increase fertility were the secrets of the village wise women. But after the holocaust against European Wise Women (the "burning times") and the virtual extermination of Native American medicine women, this knowledge virtually disappeared. In fact, many people erroneously believe that "primitive people" had no means of controlling the likelihood of pregnancy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Many common plants can be used to influence fertility, including red clover, partridge berry, liferoot, wild carrot, and wild yam. Some of these grow wild, others are easy to cultivate, and, with the exception of wild carrot, all are also readily available at health food stores.

One of the most cherished of the fertility-increasing plants is red clover (Trifolium pratense). Common in fields and along roadsides, it has bright pink (not really red) blossoms from mid-summer into the chilly days of fall. A favorite flower of the honeybees, the tops (blossoms and appending leaves) are harvested on bright sunny days and eaten as is, or dried for medicinal use. The raw blossoms are delicious in salads and nutritious when cooked with grains such as rice or millet.

To make a fertility-enhancing infusion, I take one ounce by weight of thedried blossoms (fresh won't work for this application) and put them in a quart size canning jar. I fill the jar with boiling water, screw on a tight lid, and let it steep at room temperature overnight (or for at least four hours). Dozens of women have told me that they had successful pregnancies after drinking a cup or more (up to four cups) a day of red clover infusion.

It is especially helpful if there is scarring of the fallopian tubes, irregular menses, abnormal cells in the reproductive tract, or "unexplained" infertility. It may take several months for the full effect of this herb to come on and pregnancy may not occur until you have used it for a year or two. You can improve the taste by including some dried peppermint (a spoonful or two) along with the dried clover blossoms when making your infusion. Treat the father of the child-to-be to some red clover infusion too!

That little evergreen creeper that carpets some parts of the woods around your house is partridge berry (Mitchella repens), also known as squaw weed, supposedly because of its ability to enhance fertility. (My teacher Twylah Nitsch, grandmother of the Seneca Wolf clan, says that "squaw" is a slang term meaning "schmuck" or, in the proper term, "penis," and therefore should not be used in denoting a plant meant to be used by women.) Keep an eye out this spring and see if you can catch Mitchella blooming. Then you'll see why she's sometimes called "twin flower."

Interestingly, when the paired flowers fall off, they leave behind but one berry to ripen. (The shiny red berries you've noticed in the forest winter or spring. Yes, they are safe to eat, but leave some for the partridges.) The symbolism of two flowers forming one berry is certainly a suitable icon for fertility. I make a medicinal vinegar by filling a small jar with the fresh leaves, adding apple cider vinegar until the jar is full again. A piece of waxed paper held in place with a rubber band and a label (including date) completes the preparation, which must sit at room temperature for six weeks before use. I enjoy up to a tablespoonful of the vinegar on my salads or in my beans.

By mid- to late-May, the yellow blossoms of liferoot (Senecio aureus) enliven my swamp (in upstate New York) and the neighboring roads where there is adequate water and rich soil. A powerful medicine resides in all parts of this lovely wildflower. As the root has a dangerous reputation, I restrict myself to using only the flowers and leaves, which I harvest in bloom, and quickly tincture. Small doses of this tincture (3-8 drops a day), taken at least 14 days out of the month, will regulate hormone production, increase libido, normalize the menses, relieve menstrual pain, and improve fertility. The closely related Senecia jacobea and Senecio vulgaris can also be used.

Wild carrot (Daucus carota), better known as Queen Anne's lace, is such a common roadside plant that most people are amazed to learn that it is a proven anti-fertility herb. In addition to being the wild cousin of carrot, it is related to parsley, dill, caraway, anise, celery, cumin, and a (now extinct) plant whose seeds were the birth-control of choice for many a classical Greek or Roman woman.

The aromatic seeds of wild carrot are collected in the fall and eaten (a heaping teaspoonful a day) to prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg. In one small study the effectiveness rate after thirteen months of use was 99%. As modern scientific medicine reports that one-third of all fertilized eggs are passed out of the body without implanting in the uterus, this method of birth control seems in complete agreement with nature.

Of the hundreds of women currently using this anti-fertility agent, I have heard virtually no reports of any side-effects. Note that many books caution you to beware the danger of confusing poison hemlock and wild carrot. Poison hemlock is rather scarce in our area, and, at any rate, does not smell or taste of carrot (as does Queen Anne's lace), so I believe this warning to be a red herring. In addition, wild carrot leaves have small hairs on them, while the leaves of poison hemlock are smooth.

Another anti-fertility herb that has been tested by small groups of modern women is wild yam (Dioscorea villosa). Since birth-control pills were originally made from this plant, it is not at all surprising that it has the effect of blocking conception when taken daily in rather large doses: either a cup of tea or two capsules taken three times a day.

Does it have detrimental effects? Current studies are too small to show any, but there is a possibility that there could be. Interestingly enough, if wild yam is taken in small doses (a cup of tea or 10-20 drops of the tincture daily from onset of menses until mid-period) it increases fertility! In either case, the effect seems to be triggered by the large amount of hormone-like substances found in this root. When taken daily, these substances may be converted into progesterone, thus decreasing the possibility of conception. When taken for the two weeks preceding ovulation, these substances may be converted into LH and FSH, hormones that are needed to make the egg ready to be fertilized.

Other common weeds and garden plants of our area that have been used to increase or decrease fertility include stinging nettle, oatstraw, pennyroyal, Jack-in-the-pulpit, rue, and parsley.
